Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

A Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) is a routine blood test that measures 14 different substances in the blood to evaluate overall health. It provides important information about your liver function, kidney function, electrolyte balance, blood sugar, and protein levels. Because it covers multiple systems, it is one of the most commonly ordered tests during annual checkups, hospital visits, and diagnostic evaluations.

The CMP helps detect a wide range of medical issues early, including diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, dehydration, and metabolic disorders.

  • Fasting for 8–12 hours may be required (especially for glucose accuracy).

  • Drink water but avoid food, caffeine, and alcohol before the test (if fasting is required).

  • Follow doctor’s instructions about medications.

What the CMP Measures (14 Components)

Below is a clear, detailed, and professional description of a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) — including what it measures, why it’s done, and what each component means.
If you want it in a short version, table format, or clinic brochure style, just let me know!

  • Measures sugar in the blood
  • High levels may indicate diabetes or stress response
  • Low levels may cause weakness, dizziness, or confusion
  • Essential for bones, heart rhythm, muscles, and nerves
  • Abnormal levels may indicate parathyroid disorders, kidney problems, or malnutrition

Types of Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen)

Measures waste products filtered by the kidneys High levels may signal kidney damage or dehydration

Creatinine

A stronger indicator of kidney function High levels suggest reduced kidney filtration

eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)

Often included to estimate how well the kidneys filter blood.

Electrolytes & Fluid Balance

Controls fluid balance and nerve function. Important for heart rhythm and muscle function. Helps maintain acid–base balance.
